Student Designer
University Product Description and Principal Function(s) The aim of this design was to design a monitoring device to assist parents / carers in reducing the incidence of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) amongst infants. The BubLuv is an innovative design which through monitoring the infant during sleep, alerts the parent or carers should a hazardous respiratory situation occur. The BubLuv measures oxygen (SpO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations of the infant during the infant’s sleep cycles. This data is then interpreted by the device and relayed to the parent via gentle glowing signals, in order to provide a peace of mind. Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award? The area of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome was heavily researched and compiled into a thesis as part of a yearlong research project. From the research, there became evident the need for a design to fill this gap in the market.Very few measures currently exist to monitor young infants in the unfortunate event of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and those that do, are not deemed effective in reducing the incidence of SIDS. The research also identified what the clinically proposed causes behind the syndrome are and the underlying risk factors contributing to these. From the research, it was identified that oxygen and carbon dioxide levels measured directly would prove more effective than other measures. The design works by first measuring the SPO2 and CO2 levels of the infant via the ankle bracelet through the use of a co-oximeter. This data is then relayed to the parent device, where the infant’s breathing patterns are then portrayed as gentle glowing signals. The PLETH wave detected allows for the breathing cycles to be displayed as gentle fading. Green representing normal breathing and red representing potentially harmful levels of CO2 / ceasement of breathing. There was no need for complex graphs or digital readouts to confuse the parent. The simplest and most effective way possible of portraying the infant’s vital signs was through symbolic glowing. The form of the design mimics that of an egg, thus being a symbol of life. The gentle curves and soft polyethelene casing gives the BubLuv a warm, comforting appeal. The appeal of a soft “breathing” form parents can take with them, is symbolic of the infant itself. The design is simple, durable and easy to use. Very simple forms can be easily manufactured. Materials were chosen weighing up a balance of price, durability and texture. It is safe to use and does not pose any danger to the infant and could easily be passed on to newer parents once no longer needed. The BubLuv provides parents / carers with the peace of mind and comfort they desire. |
