Student Designer
University Product Description and Principal Function(s) EULO is the future thinking of sustainable products for the home. The innovative design enables instant grey water recycling for reuse whilst washing dishes in the home kitchen. EULO means constant rinsing without the water waste. Featuring three levels of inbuilt filtration, a primary particle strainer, a gravity activated carbon filter and a UV sanitiser. It also includes automatic detergent mixing and an entirely fresh water tap. EULO is a complete system that redefines the function of the domestic kitchen sink. With drought and the cost of water set to increase, EULO sets the benchmark of sophisticated and sustainable H20 products. Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award? Water conservation and the individual's responsibility to practice sustainable behaviours are at the forefront of issues that are impacting Australia and the planet. The EULO Grey Water Recycling Kitchen Sink is a world first in terms of a design that enables 100% of domestic kitchen sink water to be reused. This is water from a number of applications at the sink that is literally going down the plughole. The entire unit is a system that includes all pipeware and filtration, tapware and sink basin as well as additional accessories such as; dishrack, colander, breadboard, bristle sock and plugs. The EULO Kitchen Sink is able to recycle water via a series of specially designed filters. The water passes through a primary particle strainer that fits into the main sink basin, then located directly beneath the plughole the water is further filtered by the gravity activated carbon filter and lastly sanitised using ultra-violet light. The water has detergent mixed automatically before being pumped back through the grey water tap. On completion of washing dishes the water is directed for garden irrigation. The specially designed three-way-valve allows the water to either; cycle, be reused in the garden or sent to regular drainage. The inner workings were prototype tested in stages and the results proved the system works. The nature of the design presented a unique opportunity to redefine the image of the kitchen sink and push the boundaries of future sink design, whilst maintaining an appropriate visual language. The minimalist geometric styling is contempory with splashes of colour added by the accessories. The tapware is mounted on flexible hose so the user can comfortably perform a range of tasks. The drainage areas either side of the main sink basin are recessed and plumbed into the system. This means that stacked dishes are more hidden and the workstation is more efficient as the colander, breadboard and dishrack interchange in the side basins allowing the user to customise their workspace and leaving the main sink free. The sink top is manufactured from Corian but has the option for stainless steel as well as various mounting alternatives. Corian is a durable and environmentally-friendly material. An instructional panel located inside the fold down inner component shelf diagramatically explains the ease of use and servicability to the user. By placing the grey water tap beyond a young child's reach means reused water cannot be used unsafely. EULO complies with current grey water standards, however as a student project would be further developed as it pushes the boundaries of grey water applications. The design has considered environmental sustainability in every aspect; from long lifespan to material and manufacturing choices. The EULO sink is targeted at a market open to high end sustainable products as it redefines the nature of water saving devices. EULO is invisaged as a future thinking sustainable product, however is entirely feasible at present as manufacturing costs are estimated at $1800 for the complete system to be sold to the consumer at $3000. This is very competitive in the higher end sink market considering EULO is a complete package. |
