University Product Description and Principal Function(s) Water measuring unit that can be attached to standard tap and shower fittings in our homes. The unit accurately measures the water consumption from a single outlet and by increases user awareness may help reduces water consumption. The consumption is measured by an internal turbine and sensor and the water usage is displayed in litres on an LCD screen. The unit also includes an internal generator that recharges the batteries as the unit operates, therefore no battery replacement is necessary. Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award? Current Water restrictions in Australia are currently based on time. Three minute showers are an inaccurate way of controlling water usage. This project is an innovative device that is based on cheap existing technology. It performs a function that is needed in today’s water shortages. Instead of limiting our showers and water usage by time we can know an accurate measure of consumption and try and limit our usage to a minimum. This unit can also measure flow rate and can also include a clock feature. The product is a compact unit with a slick finish. Its form does not allow for any water containment resulting in a quick dry and no scum build-up. The form does not clash with the tap and shower fittings and will match most kitchens and bathrooms to an extent. The positioning of the display screen can also be adjusted to suit the users’ needs. The single button control makes the use of the unit quick and easy. The location of the control button is right under the screen making the locating of the button easy. The unit uses an internal turbine to measure the water usage. Every rotation of the turbine is recorded by a magnetic sensor and an accurate measure is given. The internal components are designed in a way that no electrical components are ever in contact with water, and materials used are corrosion and heat resistant. The internal axel of the turbine includes a ceramic bearing resulting in no corrosion or wear. The assembly of the unit is designed so it is water proof and durable. This was achieved by using gaskets sealants and small tolerances. This unit also includes an internal generator that induces a current when the unit is operating and recharges the batteries. This is achieved by revolving two magnets located on the turbine around a coil located in the centre of the axel. By recharging the batteries the unit is self powered and does not need battery replacement making it user friendly and environmentally friendly. This product deserves to win the Dyson awards because it covers all of the Dyson criteria as explained above. It is also something that is not address by any item currently on the market. It is a sustainable product that is needed both at home and in the workplace. Its task is an important one as it may reduce water consumption in our homes and businesses. |
