Product Description and Principal Function(s)

THE PROJECT IS A STEAM IRON UTILISING ZONE-LESS INDUCTION TECHNOLOGY AS A HEAT SOURCE. THE IRON TABLE CONTAINS THE POWER SOURCE AND ELECTRIC CONTROLS MEANING THE IRON IS CORD FREE. THIS REDUCES THE PARTS NUMBERS IN THE IRON, ALLOWING THE DESIGN CONFIGURATION TO MOVE AWAY FROM CURRENT STYLES.

THE TABLE HAS TWO AREAS, THE HEAT ZONE, WITH THE ELECTRO MAGNETICS, AND A COOL AREA FOR PLACING THE IRON. THE SYSTEM USES TECHNOLOGY SIMULAR TO THAT DEVELOPED BY De Dietrich FOR USE IN INDUCTION COOK TOPS, WITH MANY INBUILT SAFETY FEATURES SUCH AS OVERHEAT SHUTDOWN, EXPLOITING THE INDUCTION TECHNOLOGY.

Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award?

THIS PROJECT REPRESENTS EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN BY USING AN EXISTING TECHNOLOGY AND ADAPTING IT TO IMPROVE ANOTHER USER NEED, WITH ALL THE BENEFITS OF INDUCTION AS A HEAT SOURCE.

THE IDEA OF THE PROJECT IS VERY ORIGINAL AND INNOVATIVE. DURING RESEARCH I FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF INDUCTION TECHNOLOGY BEING USED FOR CLOTHES IRONS

INDUCTION TECHNOLOGY IS USED IN BOTH INDUSTRY AND HOUSEHOLD AS A HEAT SOURCE. AS A COOKTOP IT HAS MANY BENEFITS, USING LESS ENERGY, FASTER STARTUP TIMES, AND SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS WITH THE SURFACE NOT BEING THE HEAT CONTACT AREA.

ADAPTING IT TO BE USED IN THE IRON PASSES THESE INNOVATIONS ON. THE IRON WILL HEAT QUICKER, USE LESS POWER, BE SAFER FOR BOTH USERS AND NON-USERS SUCH AS YOUNG CHILDREN.

NOT REQUIRING A CABLE, THE STYLE OF THE IRON CAN BE CHANGED TO IMPROVE ERGONOMICS AND VISUAL IMPACT.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO THE IRON ARE THE INCLUSION OF BUTTON CUTAWAYS ON THE BASE PLATE. THE CUTAWAYS ALLOWS THE IRON TO BE PLACE BETWEEN TWO BUTTONS AND THE MATERIAL BENEATH CAN BE IRONED EASIER. ALSO COMBINING THE WATER SPRAY NOZZLE WITH THE WATER CONTAINER PLUG ALLOWS FOR SMOOTH CURVES AND LINES IN THE IRON.

THE IRONING TABLE ALSO ADDS INNOVATIONS, WITH A STORAGE CONTAINER WHICH ALLOWS THE IRON TO BE ENCLOSED AND THE WHOLE SYSTEM CAN BE CONVIENTLY STORED AWAY.

THE IRON WAS DESIGN WITH PRODUCTION IN MIND. WITH A X AXIS CONSTRUCTION, THE PARTS ARE JOINED, STARTING AT THE BASE PLATE WITH A COMBINATION OF SCREW FASTENERS, LOCATING CLIPS AND ULTRASONIC WELDING/ADHESIVES.

USING COMMON METALS AND PLASTICS, THE PRODUCT CAN BE PRODUCED WITH SUSTAINABILITY AT THE FOREFRONT, WITH DISASSEMBLY AND END OF LIFECYCLE CONSIDERED.
