University Product Description and Principal Function(s) TREAD is a bicycle mounted GPS travel recording device that offers users the ability to record information about what, when, where, and how they ride. The TREAD is designed to improve the safety, efficiency and usage of bicycles by equipping riders with powerful travel recording features. The TREAD offers a much needed design change to the standardised user rituals, aesthetics and features of current Bike Computers.Accompanied by a powerful online software tool TREAD gives riders the ability to analyse and share important travel information online, fostering an environment of social networking and information exchange on an unprecedented level. Why does the product represent design excellence and why do you believe it deserves an Australian Design Award? Research has found that bike riders feel ill informed and unsafe while riding, which hampers overall usage rates and gives rise to unnecessary accidents. The conclusions drawn from this research has been that better access to information and bike riding know-how would better improve this situation. The TREAD travel recording device has been designed in combination with the ‘TREAD Online’ software to achieve this. TREAD Online is an extremely flexible online software tool that allows users to upload, analyise and share the information they record with their TREAD device. TREAD online incorporates many features ranging from real time Google map powered route analysis, hazard plotting, bicycle infrastructure mapping etc:, with social networking features such as forums and chat dialogues, with competitive performance features such as user versus user software, and personal performance tracking features. The TREAD Online software is also accessible to the public through a ‘public account’ feature and is intended in the spirit of encouraging a better informed riding community for all. The TREAD device is an entirely original design evolution of current Bike computer devices. Centered around powerful GPS recording features, the TREAD is an intelligent product capable of automatically recording most things that riders do while riding, such as: route, time, distance, and hazards. The TREAD also uses a screen-less design, that places emphasis on post data feedback (rather than traditional real time feedback). The TREAD also has innovative world-first foot controlled features. Dubbed the ‘Pedal Smart system’ the TREAD is controlled by the user using sensors mounted on the Pedals of their bike, and allows an entirely different user ritual to emerge, that is both safer to use and ultimately caters to users that are less real-time performance driven and more experience oriented. The TREAD has also been designed for all environments. Manufactured from Injection Moulded Polyurethane and Pressure cast Aluminium parts, the TREAD’s weather resistant and rugged aesthetic serve both functional and visual purposes, and encourage a confidence in consumers of the TREAD’s physical capabilities that Bike computers currently do not. The TREAD can be easily detached and swapped between bikes, and the form of the TREAD also ensures its ability to fit onto almost any style of bike. The flexibility of the TREAD’s software also creates a much more user friendly experience that can guides the user through the set up and operation of the device. The TREAD also operates at a lower rate of energy consumption because of its screen-less design, but ultimately the TREAD is encouraging bike riding, an environmentally friendly activity. If that is not good for the environment, I don’t know what is! In short however, the TREAD Travel Recorder is an innovative product that provides real health, safety and lifestyle benefits to both TREAD users and the general public. TREAD represents a product that is in tune with the Dyson design philosophy of taking significantly innovative steps towards improving existing products for the benefit of the end user, using a holistic design approach. Ride Safe, Ride Well, Ride More. |
